College Commits: Sylvie Zgonc to South Dakota State University Girls Volleyball
Aashi Iyengar
Check out HHS senior Sylvie Zgonc’s interview about her commitment to play volleyball at South Dakota State University.
How do you feel that you do in school?
“I think that it’s difficult to stay up-to-date with school, especially in season, and that’s kind of when my grades are at their lowest, but then, when I get out of season, I can really spend more time on stuff. It’s been really hard to balance it, but over the years, I’ve gotten better at it, and my grades are pretty good now.”
Typically, what kind of classes would you say you take?
“I like taking science classes because I see them the most in real life. I’m in AP Enviro right now, and everything we are learning right now, I see it happening around me outside. That’s what I want to do in college too, something in science.”
Why volleyball?
“My dad coached club [volleyball] before I was born, and then I started playing [for] Jr. Chargers. Fifth grade was my first year and he was my coach. It’s been kind of a rough journey for me because I’ve been cut a lot of times but I just kept with it, and here I am. And I just love it, so that’s the main thing, I love it.”
Why South Dakota State?
“I really like the conference that they’re in, it’s very competitive, and I went to summer camp there this summer and got to know all the other girls in my class and I love them all. We’re so excited to move in with each other, finally. The coaching staff is really good, they just came in and the program is on the rise now which is what I was looking for when I was doing my recruiting process. I’m really excited!
What are you planning on majoring in?
“I’m going to be majoring in exercise science since I want to do physical therapy.”
What experiences do you feel that you’ve had, whether it be through Hamilton or through any other clubs that you feel have prepared you for playing a sport in college?
“Something, I think, is the team aspect because I learned how to work with teammates that I like and teammates that I don’t like which I find that like, in a job, you’ll have coworkers you don’t like and then, same with coaches and bosses they all kind of like relate and just all the lessons I’ve learned have been the biggest thing.”
