Ten Must-Watch Rom-Coms for this Fall
Violet Rhoades
As days become shorter, temperatures drop, and the leaves turn brown, it's the perfect time to snuggle up by the fire and watch a movie. Not just any movie–a romantic comedy. They are the backbone of Hollywood, and if you disagree, you have obviously never had a bad day cured with the magical voice of Heath Ledger. This list will guide you through ten ultimate romantic comedies that will have you giggling and rooting for love to prevail.
#10- The Wedding Planner
This film starring Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey is a classic for all hopeless romantics. After being chased down a road and almost stomped by a runaway dumpster, wedding planner Mary Fiore is saved by a perfectly handsome doctor. Fiore thinks she has finally understood the love at first sight in every meet cute all her clients always talk about, but how disappointed will she be when she finds out that business should not always be mixed with pleasure?
#9- A Cinderella Story
A staple in many high schoolers’ childhoods, A Cinderella Story starring Chad Michael Murray and Hillary Duff, tells the classic story of the phone mix-up, leading to the perfect relationship. Sam Montgomery initiates an anonymous online relationship, but after agreeing to reveal identities at the school dance, what will Sam do when she finds out her secret admirer is none other than Austin Ames, the most wanted guy at the school?
#8- Clueless
If you haven't seen this 1995 film starring Paul Rudd and Alicia Silverstone, I’m not sure what you're doing. After the main character Cher finds success in playing matchmaker with two teachers from her school, she decides to give the hopeless new girl Tai a makeover too. When Tai surpasses her in popularity, what will Cher do when she finds out her misfit ex-step brother was completely right about how foolish she is, and how foolish will she be when she realizes she's falling for him?
#7- 13 going on 30
After a total disaster 13th birthday party, Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner) wishes nothing more than to wake up as an adult, skipping past her teen years. I guess for her, birthday wishes do come true. This movie follows her attempting to navigate life after waking up as her 30-year-old self. She makes it her new goal to track down her childhood best friend Matt Flamhaff (Mark Ruffalo) to find out just what had happened. How shocked will she be to find out Matt isn't the boy she used to know?
#6- How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Another Matthew McConaughey classic follows the lives of Andie Anderson, an advice columnist whose newest story is on how to lose a guy in 10 days. Simultaneously, advertising executive Ben Berry is taking part in a bet that he can make any girl fall in love with him in under 10 days. Andie is doing anything to get Ben to break up with her, while Ben’s doing everything to make her stay with him. What will happen when the facades crumble and they start to discover each other's true selves?
#5- Legally Blonde
What could a girl who has everything possibly want? In Elle Woods' (Reese Witherspoon) case the only thing on her mind is to be Mrs. Warner Huntington III. She's heartbroken when her boyfriend, Warner, breaks up with her due to her blonde hair and untamed pink style. She assembles all of her troops to get into Harvard to show Warner just how untamed she can be…
#4- When Harry Met Sally
One of my personal favorite fall rom-coms, When Harry Met Sally follows freshly graduated Harry Burns (Billy Crystal), and Sally Albright (Meg Ryan), who share an awkward car ride. They spend hours debating back and forth over if men and women can have platonic friendships. After going their separate ways, when they reunite ten years later, they unintentionally push the limits of their college theories.
#3- Say Anything
Say Anything is the classic high school rom-com. Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) plays an undirected student who becomes infatuated with Diane Court (Ione Skye), the beautiful valedictorian, and will stop at nothing to gain her love. Dobler runs into a problem when Diane’s protective father learns of his intentions. She becomes enchanted by Dobler, but what will happen when her father finds out about her relationship? And how will their relationship stand when Court’s life begins to crumble?
#2- The Notebook
The Notebook is one of the original romances that follow the plot of a poor boy and a rich girl, but in reality, it's so much more than just that. Allie (Rachel McAdams) and Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) are convinced that their love will last forever. That fantasy quickly ends when Noah is sent to serve in World War II. In the meantime, Allie moves on and marries a man named Lon after receiving her parents' approval. She thinks that it's the end of her love life, but once Noah returns back to their small town, she swiftly realizes how fast true love can rekindle.
#1- 10 Things I Hate About You
New student, Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), falls in love with Bianca Stratford (Larisa Oleynik) at first glance and makes it his new mission to do everything in his power to make her fall in love with him. Simple right? Wrong. Bianca's older sister, Kat is beautiful yet extremely abrasive, causing most boys to steer clear. Stratford house rules state that Bianca can't date until Kat does, so Cameron gets to work. He thinks he found the perfect candidate, misfit Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger), and after some negotiation (and a cash backer), his plan is officially in action. When Patrick and Kat break down each other's walls, they realize that they have more in common than what meets the eye. Kat thinks that she has finally met her match, but what will happen when she finds out the unfortunate truth about what caused the start of their relationship?
