ALBUMS
ALBUM #1: Kansas Anymore (The Longest Goodbye) by ROLE MODEL
ROLE MODEL is one of the best breakout artists of this past year. His sophomore album, Kansas Anymore (The Longest Goodbye)—which explored feelings of heartbreak and longing over a lost love—was a masterpiece. The addition of the four songs that made up Kansas Anymore (The Longest Goodbye) explored feelings of regret but finally, with the last track being “The Longest Goodbye,” transitioned into healing to close out the album.
ALBUM #2: So Close to What by Tate McRae
An absolute no-skip album. Tate uses this album as the perfect opportunity to show her versatility as an artist. From whispery choruses to experimentation with different instrumentals, each track is distinguishable and equally captivating. Give this girl a Grammy please!
ALBUM #3: Oh! The Ocean by The Wombats
According to Genius, this English rock band’s new album title is inspired by an existential crisis that Matthew Murphy—lead vocalist and main songwriter of The Wombats—had on a beach, realizing for the first time that he was really seeing life.
Oh! The Ocean can be best characterized as indie rock and pop with experimental electronic elements. It’s adventurous, and you can tell The Wombats enjoyed themselves with the creation of this album. Lyrics are strong, and the overall mood of the album is fun and upbeat.
K&L’S TOP TRACKS OF DECEMBER
Kendall -
“(You) On My Arm” by Leith Ross
“I’d be better armed / If you’d agree to take it”
For all of the daydreamers out there, this song perfectly encapsulates the feeling of a crush. Leith Roth, taking a step back from their usual somber style of songs, decides to go for something more upbeat in this song. This lighthearted song is sure to lift your spirits or at least, feed into your delusions.
“Jupiter” by Matt Maltese
“I need you like a fire needs a log / Jupiter couldn’t keep me from you / Oh, I’m yours”.
Even though there may be distance, other people, and unforeseen obstacles, nothing could ever stop this love that Maltese so beautifully, yet simply, describes.
“Some Protector” by ROLE MODEL
“And I will always be some protector”
In this song, ROLE MODEL grapples with the feeling of attachment, even though they have already moved on to someone new. He carries the guilt of not doing enough but still wanting to be “some protector.” In the bridge, it almost feels like he is bargaining with himself, questioning why he still feels the way he does after all of this time.

“Revolving door” by Tate McRae
From Tate’s newest album So Close To What, “Revolving door” explores toxic cycles. Personally, my favorite parts are the bridge and refrain at the end of the song where her racing thoughts are synonymous with a revolving door.
She ends the music video breaking down after an exerting dance routine and exhaustion from being a singer, songwriter, and performer. There’s a clever loop embedded as the video ends with her getting up and saying “again?” as the video starts over.
There’s also a nod to Tate’s sophomore album THINK LATER in this track, as she’s mentioned “a night out in Boston” twice now.
“National Anthem” by Lana Del Rey
From Lana’s sophomore studio album, Born To Die, National Anthem is cinematic and empowering like all the other tracks on Born To Die. This cinema is reflected in the music video featuring rapper A$AP Rocky, who played John F. Kennedy while Lana played Jacqueline. It beautifully portrays the patriotism and nostalgia of 1960s America.
“Just for Me” by Pinkpantheress
I hope none of you have forgotten about this lovely woman. Take a trip down memory lane this month and check out hyper-pop-star Pinkpantheress.
