This past weekend, Sweets 4 Sustainability held their Bugline Trail cleanup, which served as a grand finale for their service project benefitting the Environmental Defense Fund.
Over the course of the past three weeks, the group of AP Lang juniors and seniors organized three bake sales held in the cafeteria after school. These bake sales showcased Earth-inspired sugar cookies, dirt cups, cake pops, and more. There was truly something for everybody! The spread of desserts attracted a huge crowd of enthusiastic customers, helping Sweets 4 Sustainability to raise over $600 for the Environmental Defense Fund.
As promised, the team collected a piece of trash for every dollar raised. A total of 13 dedicated volunteers joined the AP Lang students, scouring the Bugline Trail and its bordering treelines for all kinds of trash, from plastic bottles to cigarette butts. Young and old alike joined the cleanup initiative. It was an inspiring display of multigenerational passion for the Sussex community and its sustainability. After less than two hours, two 30-gallon trash bags were filled to the brim.
Sweets 4 Sustainability led a unique service project that not only satisfied a sweet tooth or two, but also made a substantial environmental impact. The success of the joint endeavor serves as an example of how collective action can make a significant difference in the wellbeing of our planet. By coming together under a common goal, we can create a lasting positive impact on our global health–one bake sale or cleanup event at a time.
