The Extravagance of a Record

About a month ago, we witnessed the crazed and inevitable feeling of shock. What we knew would leave a laugh on the faces of obsessed NBA fans about a decade ago, turned into a reality. When LeBron James hit the fadeaway that would embrace and leave a mark on his legacy, his strong hostile atmosphere supposedly and expectedly didn’t leave. Prior to LeBron, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar scored his 31,420th point of his career breaking the NBA’s all-time scoring record, which had been held by Wilt Chamberlain. On the date of February 7, 2023, we have seen analysts and the media go crazy. Along with all the deranged posts and tweets, we saw a significant amount of hate. The media has even gone out far into saying LeBron’s teammates are “petty” and “jealous.” Michael Beasley (LeBron’s former teammate) says, “It’s a good percentage of the world that just wanna go against the grain. That’s literally what we get.”

How authentic and extravagant can getting an award at the highest level of basketball be? The scoring title of today’s “modern era” is supposedly unbreakable. It is safe to say it is quite an exhilarating and monumental achievement. Though behind all these positive implementations, how can the media depict this? Does this decrease the extravagance of a record? Is this something the NBA should interfere with?

Welcome back NBA fans, today we will go over delights and despondencies of the past week. We will be discussing Ja Morant’s suspension, Steph Curry's return, and the games of the week.

Morant May Have Jumped A Little Too Far

Ja Morant is one of my favorite players in the NBA. From a scrawny teenager who was unranked, to an electrifying and explosive guard who arguably is changing the league, Ja Morant has averaged 27.1 points per game ever since the start of the season. “Most exciting young players star away from NBA courts after the gun controversy.” Ja Morant unexpectedly and disappointedly flashed a gun in a livestream. Ja Morant will be away from the Memphis Grizzlies for at least their next two games, the team said Saturday, not long after the NBA opened an active investigation into a social media post by the guard after he live streamed himself flashing a gun at a nightclub. He was also accused of assaulting a teen boy at a pick-up game.

The NBA stands for numerous causes. Though Morant has continued his hot flare during the season, a suspension consisting of two days? A felony as controversial as assault and gun violence is only a punishment as conservative as two days? How desperate can the NBA be at times? How heavily reliant is the NBA on its superstars? Once again, is this something the NBA should interfere with?

Chef Curry Is Back Cookin

Though Curry did appear to be “rusty” on the court for the first three quarters, his rust tarnished as he scored 19 in his final 27 points. “He looked great. He is who he is. He strikes fear in his opponents and opens up a lot of things for  his teammates,” Warriors head coach Steve Kerr said. Curry was on a minutes restriction after missing 11 games with a left leg injury. He ended up playing 32 minutes in an important game for both teams. I felt like I got stronger as the game goes on,” Curry said. “It felt great to get thrown back in there right away. It was a little sluggish as far as the sharpness of skills early on, but then you start to feel the spirit of the game. If I get better as the game goes on, that’s always a great sign for me individually.”
