Under Heavy Scrutiny, Menomonee Falls “Indians” Moniker to be Retired

In recent years, there has been increasing awareness of the offensiveness of Native American-based mascot names in sports, even in our local area.
Perhaps the most prominent of these issues, the Washington Redskins have been under long-term controversy due to their stereotypical imagery and name. The “redskin” stereotype is seen by many as an insensitive and bygone name that degrades the culture of native groups; however, despite the popularity of the movement to retire the name, there is no clear plan of action at this point.
On the other hand, the Cleveland Indians are a pro team that has made changes in their branding. Their cartoon-ish Indian character “Chief Wahoo,” seen prominently in their primary logo, on their jerseys, and on their hats, was recently replaced by a neutral “C” logo. This icon pays homage to their city instead of offensively objectifying native cultures. While the name “Indians” is still in place, the Cleveland ballclub stands out as a rare pro team that has taken initiative in removing offensive imagery.
Conversely, the Florida State Seminoles, taking the name of a local tribe, have not taken action to remove their mascot name. Despite utilizing an Indian-related name, this team has close relations to the Seminole tribe, and the tribe feels the nickname is positively representing their culture, recognizing it instead of appropriating it. It appears that the Florida State nickname will be staying around for a while.
This controversy has even been seen in our local area. The “Indians” mascot name has been deeply rooted in the history of high schools in Menomonee Falls, and the nickname has been a traditional part of the village since the town’s first high school was built in 1892.
However, as pressure has risen with college teams retiring these controversial monikers, the Menomonee Falls School District has become aware of the potential need to follow this trend. In November 2019, District Superintendent Golla recommended that the school board retire the name by the end of the school year. Soon after, the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin further attempted to persuade the district to get rid of the nickname.
The topic was finally voted on at a critical school board meeting in December 2019. In a 5-2 decision, the board voted to retire the “Indians” nickname. The school will keep the burgundy and white colors as well as the school’s feather-themed “F” logo, but a new name will be put in place at a later date. After months of intense debate between tradition and cultural sensitivity, there will be a new nickname at Menomonee Falls High School.
