The holidays can be a hard time for a lot of people, on top of the difficulty of maintaining good mental health. In fact, “64% of people with mental illness report holidays make their conditions worse” (National Alliance on Mental Illness, n.d.). And so, this week, we’re giving you a list to help your mental holiday cheer.

  • Don’t try to do too much

    • During the holiday season, we can all get caught up in a little too much. Try to set priorities for different events, and if you can, say no to some. Make sure to schedule yourself some free time and just let yourself relax.

  • Be realistic

    • No one is perfect. The perfect gift or perfect party might have a few hiccups along the way; that’s okay, remember to persevere and try to have some fun.

  • Get some exercise

    • If it isn’t too cold, take a walk! Daily exercise releases a variety of positive hormones for both your body and mind. Even just a twenty-minute indoor workout can help improve your mental health

  • Try to get some sun

    • Even if it might be a little hard to find right now, simply seeing the sun can boost your mood and help sleep. If the clouds part, try to get outside.

  • Eat well

    • With all the extra sugar common around the holidays, make sure to get some protein to balance out your emotions.

  • Prioritize self-care

    • Self-care is super important, especially during the holidays. Although it can often slip under the radar, giving yourself your best can dramatically improve your mood during the holidays.

From all of us at Charger Press, have a wonderful holiday season, and a happy new year!
