As we talk about the thrill of high school sports and the competitive atmosphere between two teams and their distinct perspectives on strategic game play, fans and high school students don’t know the “behind the scenes” of all the hard work. How do these rigorous high school practices make student athletes really feel? How does the team as a whole communicate? How competitive do practices get? These are all questions that unveil our curiosity about sports and the thrill that hides beyond game days. Out of all fall sports, volleyball is one of the most disciplined sports that includes a balance of athleticism, heart, and perseverance. How do these questions above tie into our volleyball program?

To start, let’s hear from the players themselves. Junior Henry Mrotek says, “Practice gives me something to look forward to every day after school.” Practices for almost any high school sport can seem dreadful. From running sprints to feeling sore the next day, it can be difficult to adapt. However, volleyball provides a sense of family and closure that brings the team together.

Speaking of family, senior Max Bayer says, “I would say that our greatest strength is that we are a family, not just a team. It’s a bunch of brothers going out there every day doing what we love not just for ourselves but for each other.” It is safe to say that talent is not the only factor that drives Hamilton volleyball. As I said before, closure and family make the team strive to succeed. A family has each other’s back in times of denial and frustration. A family is filled with leaders who uplift the teama family who will love each other no matter what. There is a reason why in times of tests, family is best.

Moving on, what do practices look like? Junior Nolan Doherty says, “Practices can get very competitive under game-like situations.” For those of you who have played high school sports, you know how they feel. However, it is the competitive atmosphere in practice that prepares the team for game days. It is the applied pressure that sets the team up for success in those high-intensity moments. These characteristics are what set the team apart from other teams.

Now that we have approached the middle of the season, let’s talk about how the team is doing. With the Chargers starting at a record of 1-3 to an astonishing 21-4 record, the team as a whole is playing at an incredibly high level. Coming back from a win in their last tournament, the Chargers have taken down teams such as Arrowhead, Marquette, Appleton North, Waukesha Fusion, Kimberly, and Catholic Memorial. These teams are all top 8, which makes the Hamilton Chargers rank 1 in the D1 Greater Metro Conference.

As we continue through the season, I think I can speak for everyone when I say we are excited about what our boys will bring to the table. As I spoke with many of the talented players on the team, they all feel confident in their chemistry and skill set for the rest of the season. With a goal of winning State and bringing home a title for Sussex Hamilton, the district of Hamilton will tag along on the journey with Hamilton Volleyball as they advance in their future playoff schedule.
