Erik Ten Hag, the former Manchester United manager has been sacked. United fans are glowing, watching the Dutchman leave the club, putting behind two awful seasons with success in two domestic competitions. According to NYT, former Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo stated this in an interview with former teammate, Rio Ferdinand:
“(As) Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you’re not going to fight to win the league or Champions League. You have to be, to mentally say, listen, maybe we don’t have that potential, but I cannot say that. We’re going to try. You have to try.”
The fight to remove Ten Hag from this position has been going on since the day Cristiano rejoined the club in 2022.
That same year, Ten Hag took over the club. He had exceptional talent in his squad. But as the players grew to dislike him, many of them were released from the club or personally ended their contracts so they could leave the club. This left the Dutchman with less developed players to work with such as Garnacho, Rasmus Højlund, and other underdeveloped talent. Ten Hag struggled last season, getting United down to 8th in the Premier League.
After a bad performance from Ten Hag last season, he started no differently this year. He failed to lead United to a single victory during their first three Europa League matches which is Manchester United’s worst ever start to the Premier League. The Glazers family, who are the owners of the club, said the final word and they got rid of Erik Ten Hag.
In a new light, a hero rose out of Ten Hag’s shadows and led United to a 5-2 victory over Leicester City. The goalscorers of this match were Garnacho, the young talent who was “not ready” in the words of Erik Ten Hag, Carlos Casemiro, who has faced backlash after a poor performance in the first half of the Manchester United vs. Liverpool match but responded with two goals, and Bruno Fernandes, who scored a brace as well after collecting two red cards this season. This glory was observed under the management of Manchester United legend Ruud Van Nisterooly who was previously a part of Ten Hag’s coaching staff, but remained at United to showcase his managing talents. Recently, Van Nisterooly helped United draw 1-1 against Chelsea, whom they lost 3-4 to last season.
It is reported that Van Nisterooly is waiting for the arrival of Ruben Amorim, who retired from football at the age of 32 because he thought he would be a far better manager than he was a footballer. While Amorim struggled with acquiring a UEFA coaching license, he eventually got the task done all while winning three different trophies with the club, Sporting CP. Recently, Amorim led Sporting to a 4-1 victory against Manchester City in the Champions League. United fans are waiting patiently for Ruben and Van Nisterooly to swoop in and save their club and shake the Premier League up.
