Connection and Community: Service Projects You Can Contribute To!

Students in Mrs. Kowalske’s AP Lang class have been assigned a unique final project: to serve their communities. In the midst of a global pandemic, service projects have shifted their focus to addressing new issues and to accommodating social distancing guidelines.

“Some of us have relatives in nursing homes right now, and we heard about how isolated they are,” says Madeline Claas, a junior at Hamilton High School. “I know my grandmother is sad that she can't see her friends, and we know that many residents probably aren't talking to their families often enough, so we wanted to remind them that people are thinking about them.” So Claas’ group decided to take action. “We are setting up a pen pal program with kids at Hamilton and members at a local Brookdale nursing home.”

Participating students and staff can choose to send a one-time letter or to become regular pen pals. By filling out this google form, you will be paired with a resident and decide how much you will write. “Most of us are very fortunate that we can interact with our families, coworkers, and friends, but many of those in nursing homes cannot right now,” and, says Claas,  “Many residents are very lonely and bored, so writing a letter to them can help to cheer them up!”

Claas’ group isn't the only one you can help with. Madelyn Mascotti, a senior at HHS, is also teaming up with photographer Roberta Pratt to promote her shoe drive, Soles For Jesus, a non-profit organization that distributes shoes to the underserved in Africa.

“Roberta is a huge part of Hamilton’s community, especially regarding sports and special events. Any donations to help her cause would be greatly appreciated for all that she does for us,” says Mascotti. “This shoe drive is the perfect way to give back to her cause.”

Help connect with your community by writing letters and donating shoes!
