Charger Press is back with this month’s Artist of the Month features! 15-year-old Dylan Carter, a sophomore at HHS, is October's Artist of the Month. Carter has been a part of the Hamilton School District for 10 years and in his words, ”enjoys drawing, video games, bowling, and going to the gym.”  Carter was nominated for Artist of the Month by Mr. Malcore who says, “Dylan has quickly shown interest in capturing and creating stunning images with his camera.  He has shown an excellent work ethic and the desire to create truly exceptional work. Carter’s work is reflective of his desire to create truly unique and well-composed images. There are instances where I have seen him capture photos that many other students would have been happy with, but Dylan pushes himself to do the absolute best that he can and will not settle for less,” says  Mr. Malcore.

Carter is currently a part of Mr. Malcore’s Photo Expression class.  “Photography Expression is a class that teaches students how to properly use and manipulate a DSLR camera to produce the desired effect.  Students then use this tool and their knowledge of it to express themselves, their ideas, and create amazing works of art,” says Mr. Malcore. Carter admired his brothers’ artistic abilities and took art classes because he thought it was very interesting and says that he would love to pursue a career in art if possible. Dylan’s work stands out because of his attention to detail, great grasp of the technical features of the camera, and ability to explore new techniques and editing styles.  In three words Mr. Malcore says that Carter was “creative, confident, and thorough.”  Dylan stands out in more ways than one in his classes with these traits!

It's no secret that inspiration to do art doesn't just appear out of thin air.  Be it painting, drawing, or taking pictures many artists say they need to get in “the zone.”  When asked what helps him get in “the zone” when he works, Dylan stated, “Usually when making art I keep an open mind and try not to block out any ideas that come to me, and this allows me to create unique and interesting compositions. My process of getting into the one is just to turn on music and just relax because when trying to force out any artwork it could be very excruciating, and the art might not be the best. So, I always try to stay relaxed and not worry about the outcome.”

Carter says that the most challenging part about being an artist is staying creative because sometimes as an artist you lose creativity for a while and it may take a while for you to find inspiration again.  He says that his art has helped him become more creative and think way differently about certain things. Dylan's favorite art pictures that he took are below.

“Art is very easy to get into no matter what your skill level is, you will learn how to become more creative and it's very fun!” says Dylan. If you ever have space in your schedule an art class might be a fun way to fill it up.  Make sure to say congratulations on becoming Artist of the Month to Dylan if you ever see him around!
