Top Ten Binge-Worthy Series
Shannon O’Dwyer
We all have those favorite shows in our back pockets that we love endlessly. Shows with characters we love and grow with and feel like we could call them our friends. Shows that we grew up with that hold a special nostalgic place in our hearts. But it’s always so dismal when these shows end and we’re left feeling a little empty, waiting until we can re-watch it. Here are 10 shows to binge when you’ve finished your favorite series.
10. Billy on the Street (Netflix)
Looking for a late night comedy? Then this is your show. It follows actor Billy Eichner (Craig Middlebrooks from Parks and Recreation) around the streets of New York City hosting his own game show. Now bear in mind, this is not your traditional gameshow; it adds a whole new twist to game shows. Basically, Billy runs around yelling at unsuspecting people on the streets who he gets to play obscure games. For example, he plays a game called “For a Dollar,” where he asks strangers random questions and if they get it right, they earn a dollar. Only, the questions are completely opinion based on what Billy thinks. This is definitely worth the watch!
9. The Twilight Zone (Netflix)
An oldie but a goodie, The Twilight Zone is all independent episodes based on surreal events. Each episode follows a different narrative about some sort of personal conflict usually resulting in the characters realizing they have just entered the ‘Twilight Zone.’ The series couples complex plotlines with technology, outer space, and time travel, ultimately looping around to a twist ending. If you’re looking for something to keep you guessing, this is the show for you!
8. The Great British Bake Off (Netflix)
Another wonderful competition show, only this time it’s British. The difference between GBBO and any American competition shows that they are actually nice to each other! Not to mention, the food looks absolutely delicious and gives you baking inspiration. The contestants are always sweet to one another, no one is stuck up or conceited, they don’t even compete for money; everyone wants to be there simply for their love of baking. Another favorite!
7. Bates Motel (Netflix)
Another dark recommendation to fulfill all of your horror needs, Bates Motel follows Norman Bates and his mother living and running their own motel. Throughout the series, you are able to see the slow descent of madness Norman has as it leads up to where the classic movie, Psycho, left off. This show is as dark and maddening as it gets, up there with American Horror Story (another fantastic show). If you’re interested in losing sleep, this is your show.
6. Malcolm in the Middle (Hulu)
A true American classic, Malcolm in the Middle is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time. This show is a portrayal of the average middle class family, with all of the trials and tribulations that come with living with a family. Not only is this show entertaining, it is that way because it is relatable in a down to earth way. Every middle class family can relate to how honest it is, especially if you’re the middle child.
5. Black Mirror (Netflix)
Black Mirror is one of the most interesting shows out there, a true revolutionary show. This show offers independent episodes, typically all based in the future with extremely complicated technologies. In any given episode, this advanced technology affects the lives of everyday people, sometimes in an extremely negative way. Black Mirror comments on our evolving technological world and acts nearly as a warning to not allow technology consume us and run our lives. If you’re looking for something out of the box, this is a win!
4. Bojack Horseman (Netflix)
On the surface, Bojack Horseman may seem like another comedic cartoon, but it is in fact a comedy masquerading as a tragedy. The show follows a washed up celebrity of a 90’s sitcom who battles with alcoholism, depression, and being completely and utterly alone. It is able to make comments on how society treats people with these problems and how we view celebrities, primarily because it is told through a cartoon. I cannot recommend this show enough.
3. Orange is the New Black (Netflix)
Orange is the New Black is one of the most engrossing and interesting shows I have ever had the pleasure of watching. It follows Piper Chapman, a 30-something year old woman who was imprisoned after one false move she made in her past. This show gives an in-depth look into the terrors that women face in the American prison system. It is truly eye opening and comes with some of the most complex character arcs in modern television. Highly recommended!
2. Dawson’s Creek (Netflix)
If you were a teenager in the late 90’s and early 2000’s, then you’ll remember this show. The show follows a group of friends who are trying to manage their way through high school, first loves, and everything in between. This show was progressive for its time in its portrayal of a modern teenage life. The friendships that playout are truly heartwarming and you are able to form a real connection with the characters. Another amazing show!
1. Dexter (Netflix)
Last but not least, my all time favorite show Dexter takes the first place prize of most binge worthy tv show. This show combines everything all into one, drama, romance, horror, well written characters and arcs, and an interesting plot. It follows a blood analyst at the Miami PD who doubles as a serial killer by the name of Dexter who attempts to keep his secret identity hidden from those around him. He is able to use his work to aid his crimes. However, over the course of the show, you are able to see his arc as he grows as an individual through the connections he makes with others. Stop what you’re doing, and go watch this show!
