How Do I Play?
Rugby is a cross between soccer and football, but still so different. The ball is always in motion, with passes going backwards. Scoring, like football, has an end zone where points are scored. Players try to run the ball toward the goal post before they touch the ball down. Once a try (touchdown) is scored, a player kicks the ball between the goalpost, resulting in another point scored. Players also tackle, and similar to football, they are only tackled if they have the ball in their hands. However, players are taught how to tackle effectively and safely.
Why Join Our Team?
Our players were asked why they joined rugby. Here are some of their responses:
Emerson Strohbusch, a sophomore, said, “...for a sport similar to football” she found out that rugby is “...not as similar to football as we thought.” Strohbusch goes on to say that “...the coaches and the girls on the team have been so helpful with us learning the new skills and very welcoming to the team.”
Haley Meneses, a senior on the team, said she “loved the idea of [tackling],” continuing on to say that the reason she ended up staying on the team was because Hamilton Rugby has the “...greatest team atmosphere I have ever been a part of; the friendships I have made…[are] truly unmatched.”
Time Commitments
Rugby isn’t as much of a time commitment as many other sports at Hamilton High School, which allows the athletes more flexibility to manage their schedules. Practices are held Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Halquest Field. Games are played on Saturdays once a week. Our 7’s season which takes place in spring has a similar practice and play schedule but with multiple 14 minute games played in a day, allowing for playing time for everyone with different skill levels.
