On Friday, May 31, the Hamilton Softball Program participated in a community service project to construct lunches for individuals with food insecurity in Milwaukee through The Gathering. The project stemmed from Mrs. Kowalske’s AP Language and Composition class, in which students were tasked with creating and running their own service project. The team was able to create 196 lunch bags and 166 sandwiches, which far exceeded the goal of 150 meals. The softball team volunteered 13 athletes for the event. After the lunches were put together on Friday, we delivered the meals to Just One More Ministry, who will later distribute them around Milwaukee.
Why is this an important project? Food security is a rising issue in the United States. Even here in Sussex, we can do our part to help those in the community who are in need. When delivering the assembled meals to Just One More Ministry, we were slightly worried that we packed more than our estimated goal. However, when we arrived they were tremendously appreciative of our work, stating that they distributed almost 800 meals a week. We found it important to aid such a pressing issue in the surrounding area.
Why was packing these lunches a meaningful experience? We were excited to have an immediate impact on our community. Being able to see the warehouse and understand how many meals they distribute a week gave us a better appreciation for our work and volunteers in general. It was beneficial to work hard for the greater good of the community.
How did it promote team building? This was a great opportunity for our team to come together and do something good for the community. During this time of the season, it can become very stressful with playoffs, and this hour or two was a great way to take our minds off softball and enjoy each other.
