Congratulations to March’s male Athlete of the Month, Alex Yan! Alex is a current senior here at Hamilton. He is an instrumental part of the Varsity Boys’ Tennis team at Hamilton. Alex has made state the past two years playing both singles and doubles. Last season, Alex made it to the round of 16 in the state tournament. In doing this, he became the 13th ranked player in the state as well as tied the school record for the most matches won in a state tournament. He will be one of two team captains this season. Not only does he excel on the tennis court, but Alex also excels in the classroom ranking in the top five percent of students at Hamilton.

According to Coach Andy Fagan, “Alex is an awesome team player. He’s has helped the team in multiple different roles. He is a really good leader, but he’s truly a great person to coach and be with.”

How long have you played tennis, and why do you play?

I started playing tennis when I was eight years old. I play because it’s fun and it challenges me both physically and mentally. I love the competitiveness and discipline it requires.

Who is your athlete role model, and why?

My role model is Roger Federer because of his unparalleled work ethic, resilience, and how he’s overcome challenges both on and off the court. His game is magical and he has the respect of tennis players around the world.

What is your main goal this season?

My main goal this season is to improve and try to win doubles state.

What are your future plans involving tennis?

I plan to play tennis in college and share my love for the game with others. I’ll likely compete in club tennis if I go to a D1 school or play on the team if I go to a D2 or D3 school.

Do you play any other sports, and if so, what?

I do not play any other sports competitively :( womp womp

Do you have any teammates, coaches, parents, or other people in your life that have helped you as an athlete?

I'm grateful for my coach's guidance and especially for my parents' support. They had to take me all across the country to play tournaments and I’m forever grateful for those long drives. Additionally my teammates on the Sussex Hamilton team are amazing and they’re like family to me; I can’t wait to share one last season with them this year!

Besides tennis, what are some of your other hobbies?

When I’m not on the court, I enjoy biking, listening/singing to music, volunteering, and hanging out with my friends.

What are your pre-match rituals?

Before each match, I listen to music while I do a dynamic warm-up. I make sure to get a good meal in, usually something with a good amount of carbs. The night before, I usually spend 1-2 hours preparing my game practicing all my shots.

Do you have any pieces of advice?

My advice would be to stay consistent with your practice, always be willing to learn, and don’t forget to enjoy every moment on the court, win or lose. Just like any sport, it’s important to enjoy your time playing the sport and to truly feel inspiration to improve.
