Architectural Features
The architectural aspect of the school profoundly focuses on new, dynamic lighting that illuminates the whole school. The grey, circular lights take on a contemporary look that promotes an almost industrial vibe. These lights are consistent throughout the school creating an evenly dispersed flow of modernized lighting. As 6th-grade student Rebecca Stuettgen stated, “...the lights are really bright and really cool.”
Large scale windows featured throughout the building allow for natural light to proceed through the school. When asked about her favorite modern aspect within the school, Mrs. Roth stated, “ I love how many windows we have in the school and how much natural light is let into the building.”
Another architectural focus is the well-developed structure. This, too, differs from traditional school buildings as denoted by the many stylistic structural formations. One such example of this is the enormous “Y” shaped pillars located in both the front and back sides of the school.
Additionally, the walls are colored to their specific “house” are stylistically textured. The architecture is also strategically constructed in that it organizes the students. This organization is present in the two different building levels that designate the two different grades. Within each level, the different colored “houses” are structurally organized by actual colored walls, specifying that “house”.
Overall, Silver Spring Intermediate achieves a modern, campus-like atmosphere that deters from the conventional school establishment.
Student-Focused Features
Although it accentuates the architectural design, Silver Spring Intermediate also strives to put the spotlight on the students. By showcasing the children’s work throughout the school, students are able to express themselves and create a more familiar environment.
SSI also includes multifunctional chairs that allow kids with certain needs to sit however they like. This unique feature develops an all-inclusive atmosphere that allows students to attend to their exceptionalities.
Furthermore, each “house” includes an out-of-classroom workspace that enables children to work in either the classroom or a more secluded spot. This provides an alternative learning and working option for those students who prefer to work alone, or in small groups. One 5th grade teacher said that she, “[loves] how the pods are set-up with the classroom, a breakout area, and students lockers.”
The recess equipment is aided towards children promoting health and fitness. Each apparatus provides a brief explanation of how to properly use the equipment as well as the healthful benefits one may receive from it.
The school is also synced with Infinite Campus, allowing students and parents to track educational progress. This enables students to take on responsibility for their own grades.
Silver Spring perpetually aims to emphasize a focus on the students and the school’s ability to increase student capability.
Special Features
SSI also possesses an innovative interior. For instance, the music room is strategically placed far from classes, so as to refrain from the excessive sound that could potentially distract classrooms.
One profound aspect of the new school is the large space gym that many students seem to enjoy. It includes a full-scale basketball court as well as 6 basketball hoops. There are also accommodating locker rooms attached to the gymnasium. One wall in the gym displays an enormous painting of the word “Panthers”, in honor of school spirit.
Silver Spring certainly enjoys its paintings, as an intricate mural is extravagantly displayed above the staircase. It features a modern, cool-colored jungle with panthers sporadically placed among the painted trees. This mural is an obvious focal point of the school’s artistic properties that enchant viewers and promote Panther Pride.
The most frequently commented on aspect of Silver Spring Intermediate is the library. This unique reading area provides an arrangement of seating, varied for certain student wants/needs. The library is an open floor concept of which allows students to decompress in their own, personal space. Mrs. Roth states, “...I think our library is absolutely gorgeous! It is such an amazing space to read, collaborate, and learn!” This distinctive learning area also includes sizeable windows that overlook the woods. “I really like the library. It’s super nice. And I like how the school overlooks the forest” stated 6th-grade student Gabby Sansone.
Overall, Silver Spring Intermediate aims to focus on both its architectural design and student inclusiveness. This school thoroughly achieves a modernistic design through its constructively dynamic architecture. As for student inclusiveness, SSI includes numerous, multifunctional devices that all children may use.
